Torres and Ibrahimovic not coming to City: Attention now turns to Džeko

16 Jul

Roberto Mancini and Man City have been thwarted in their attempts to acquire the services of Fernando Torres and Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Liverpool and Barcelona, their respective clubs, both denied that there are plans afoot to sell their striker. New Scouse manager Roy Hodgson is adamant that he will keep hold of his best players, with Torres most definitely falling into that category. Speculation has been rife that the Spaniard may leave, and although Torres himself has given no confirmation that he intends to stay put, Hodgson is keen that the striker remains at Liverpool.

As for the mercurial Barcelona forward Ibrahimovic, with whom Mancini has worked before, the Catalan club’s new president Sandro Russell has reiterated his desire that the Swede doesn’t leave. Despite the signing of World Cup winner David Villa, ‘Ibra’ is still regarded as an influential player, and for the moment, the club are reluctant to sell.

With the possibility of those two arriving decreasing with every passing moment, City have turned their attention back to Wolfsburg and Bosnia striker Edin Džeko, whose remarkable scoring record has catapulted him onto the wish-list of many an ambitious club. Although City have been refuted by the German side in past, with bids deemed insufficient, my sources tell me that talks are still ongoing for the striker, who notched an impressive 22 goals in the Bundesliga last season.

The deal is nowhere near completion, but it’s clear that Džeko would love the opportunity to talk with the Blues. Arguably, he would be the most likely to forge a successful partnership with supporter’s favourite Carlos Tévez, where the Bosnian’s height and aerial ability, combined with the Argentine’s scoring proficiency, would be bound to cause defences across the country and Europe countless problems.

Let’s hope that agreement can be reached with Wolfsburg as I firmly believe that Džeko would be a sterling addition to an already mightily impressive City squad. Thanks for reading, please leave a comment with your views, and then vote in the poll.
