MAN CITY 0 – 1 Wigan – PLAYER RATINGS

12 May

Hart - Despite the ease with which Wigan moved the ball and the constant threat they seemed to pose, Hart was barely called into action. His distribution, as it has been too often this season, was wayward - 6

Zabaleta – One of the few to show some passion but even he had a difficult time containing Wigan’s vibrancy. Allowed Espinoza far too much space on the wing, failed to get forward as often as usual and then saw red late on. Not a match he’ll remember fondly - 5

Kompany - The movement, strength and hold-up play of Koné caused him numerous problems as he was unable to stamp his regular authority on proceedings. Decent in the air but dragged out of position frequently - 5

Nastasic – Another to struggle with Wigan’s raids forward. Poor positioning early on and although he was his usual assured self on the ball, he never got to grips with the opposition’s free-flowing style – 5

Clichy – Such a reliable performer normally, for perhaps only the second time in his City career, he looked all at sea. It’s rare to see him beaten time and time again but McManaman’s pace and trickery meant that Clichy had a hugely troubling 90 minutes - 4

Barry – Unlike his teammates, he showed an appetite to close down Wigan’s midfielders but they moved the ball with such pace and purpose that he struggled to gain a foothold in the game. One weak effort in the first half was the sum of his attacking efforts - 6

Y. Touré - Summed up everything that was wrong with City yesterday: a hugely talented player who offered nothing. Played at such a desperately slow tempo, his game with littered with lethargy and he injected nothing going forward - 5

Nasri - Given the nod over Milner thanks to his recent spell of more penetrative form but he seemed hesitant in the final third, unwilling to show any drive or guile. Replaced early in the second half - 5

Silva – Saw one attempt in the first blocked and his general play, although positive, suffered due to the lack of movement ahead of him. Picked up the ball in relatively dangerous areas but couldn’t find the breakthrough - 6

Tévez - Little he did in possession came off but worked tirelessly and he was one of only a couple of players to show great heart and a desire to press the opposition - 6

Aguero - Nothing he did worked. Tried to run at Wigan’s backline but was dispossessed all too easily and couldn’t hold the ball up to allow others to come into play - 5

Subs

Milner – Even in his substitute appearance, he was probably the pick of the players. Not afraid to be more direct and run at his man, and he made a difference when he was introduced - 6.5

Rodwell – One header was easily saved and one shot blocked, but he couldn’t really alter the flow of the encounter - 6

Dzeko – A very late substitute after we had conceded the goal - No time to mark

Agree with pretty much all of that mate but not Barry. He gets a 4 at best for me. Even if you only take into account that frankly pathetic ball into the center that got Zabaleta sent off. He was absolutely shocking.

Very generous to Hart I think – distribution, which was pretty much the only thing he had to do all game, was dire!

Zabaleta – firstly, it wasn’t a penalty, massive dive by Espinoza (who should have been booked for it if it wasn’t given as a penalty). Secondly, I thought he was pretty unlucky with the red, in the sense that there wasn’t a lot else he could have done. The Wigan player needed to be stopped – all came from a shocking pass on halfway by, I think, Barry.

Clichy – Was just entirely outclassed. Not a lot else you can say about that.

Yaya – the less said the better.

Tevez – very unlucky to be taken off. Seemed to be the only player, Milner aside, who seemed to want to win that game.

Pantilimon – Mancini evidently has no feelings of sentiment. Very very unlucky not to play.

I thought kompany and nasty we’re the only reason we didn’t get hammered everyone else we’re lucky to get a 4

Wow, to give silva a 6 is bullshit, nasri tried to make an impact aswell as tevez, those two deserve a 6 and the rest 4 or 5! Mancini a 2 at best..

Oh man you again overestimate barry. First of all you mention nothing about his mistake which led to zabaleta’s sent off. In addition when you lose the battle for the center with no battle at all someone’s responsible for that and he was barry. He was too slow and offered no protection. Also, you just can’t criticise aguero when he was not given the ball at all to run at defenders. Tevez was our best player and mancini the fool exchanged him for the england patient. Get the sack now!

Barry was wod class compared to Toure! At least he got stuck in and showed some willing

Although I really value his contributions in past seasons, I think it is time Barry was moved on. He’s had a desperately poor second half to the season. Yesterday he looked like a relic in midfield, not quick enough to close down and win loose balls, sloppy in possession and gave no thrust to our attacking play. Chasing shadows for most of the game.

Zabaleta – had been great this season but he was given a tough time by Jarvis v West Ham recently and yesterday by Espinoza. These are hardly great players. Not on his game at all.

Clichy – incapable of containing McManaman all game. Needed cover / help which I though Nastasic could have provided.

Kompany – constantly lunging in and selling himself. Kone had the better of him most of the game.

Toure – really worried we’ve given him a 5 year contract extension at the age of 30. Looked unfit or perhaps lazy and unwilling to do the necessary work.

    Silva – ineffective again.
    Aguero – ditto.

Tevez – the few good things we did came through him.
Nasri – reasonable first half and surprisingly subbed.

Milner – gave us more energy but Wigan assumed full control by the time he was on.

Rodwell – did ok. Perhaps could have done better with the header.

Pantilimon – must be wondering where the promised start he was given went to.

Not sure why you give Barry 6, He might have been the Avatar of Pele in the whole game but his mistake was the last nail in City’ coffin and tipped the game to Wigan’s favor. Up until his impressive goof, we still had a chance. I would give him a 1 for this game only, though overall he has been great through out the season

    • Matt J 12/05/2013 at 11:56 pm #

Tipped the game in wigan’s favour? 87th minute and we conceded from a corner! Had little impact and you’re using Barry as an excuse for a pathetic team performance. Barry has been our second best player this season by Pablo but everyone has a bad game every so often

      • Siamack 13/05/2013 at 12:07 am #

Nobody denies he has been outstanding but this does not change the fact that his goof was the one that killed any hope if there was any.

        • Matt J 13/05/2013 at 1:15 am #

It was not Gareth Barry who killed any hope off in this game, it was the 11 men who stepped onto the pitch at 5.10pm to sing the national anthem. He made one error. Surely in that case if you judge it on that alone then Zaba is at fault for a frankly ridiculous first yellow card which was needless as unnecessary on the half way line, or it’s Toure’s fault for maybe winning only one tackle etc. compared to the others on the pitch Barry had a reasonable game and was one of a handful, namely Milner Rodwell and himself who looked remotely interesed

        • Siamack 13/05/2013 at 3:05 am #

No matter how horrible City was playing, till Barry’s big goof that resulted in Zabaletta’s red card, it was 11 against 11 and there was a slight chance that much like our previous home game some thing can happen. Once it became 11-vs-10, things got impossible as City was already struggling 11-vs-11. You can watch the game and see the last kick right before Zab’s red card was Barry’s goof or you can act like a philosopher and keep beating around the bush.

What is this ‘Avatar’ shit that people keep saying when comparing people?! I know the film but haven’t seen it. Does it mean a shadow of someone?

My biggest problem is that I merely browsed the Wigan Swansea game and saw Wigan’s right winger looked tasty (McManaman), so obvious thing to do is put Milner left mid to help Clichy out. What was Mancini thinking with the (oh he played average instead of piss poor for 3 games so give the surly Derby bottling shit house a cup final starting berth) Nasri pick?! Very annoyed but my last bit of patience with Mancini ran out when he hauled Tevez. Please. Clearly our best threat yet the most disappointing thing is it seemed preordained – 75 mins and we’ll take him off. Zero man management; zero width; Garcia; Sinclair; Kolorov; Nasri; Maicon. Ta-ra.

    • Matt J 12/05/2013 at 11:57 pm #

Really agree with the point made here about taking tevez off, made no sense to me either

    • Siamack 13/05/2013 at 12:10 am #

Avatar means embodiment, or manifestation of a person in a different form or body. By the way, it is a nice movie, you may want to watch it.

I always look forward to the ‘View from a Blue’ Player Ratings and normally end up not disagreeing as such, but just stating that we should get rid of certain players (always the same players!)

It would appear that ‘Crispy’ above agrees with me!

However there are lots of other good points made above today also. Taking the feelings because we have just lost a cup final out of it…….what a successful season this has been really! 2nd in the premiership and 2nd in the FA cup. Imagine that happening 3 years ago….we would be over the blue moon!

However, we have now become a bunch of fans like some of the others in this country that EXPECT success all of a sudden….to that end, we need 5 new ‘world class’ players AND unfortunately, I thin we also now need another direction in the managerial position.. I have liked and still like Roberto, but feel he is under too much pressure and scrutiny to now succeed more than he has already. He has been great for us and I thank him, but it is now time to go..

Oh….and by the way…Yaya needs a size 12 up his backside and be told to start working again..he is turning into an Adebayor with his lackadaisical attitude.

AND Joe Hart would do well to work on his aerial skills (which are quite pathetic) and his distribution.

C’mon City…..we can win the league again next season……but if we don’t…..we can win it the season after!

Love this yaya comment! Here here

Shocked you have Silva a 6! For me one of the worst he has played for us.

Totally agree Milner was the shining light. Rodwell made good impact too.

Interesting at final whistle the only one who actually looked gutted was Nastastic who was almost in tears

I don’t want to repeat what was already said…but taking Tevez out? And c’mon man…Dzeko is still arguably best scorer of the team, saved Mancini’s jobs couple times…could Mancini give him more than 3 minutes? Madness…
