Barclays Premier League: Top of the Table Progress
4 Sep
The season is now underway and the battle at the top of the table is just beginning to sizzle. With the transfer window having now slammed shut and squads settled, it is the perfect time to assess how each of the title candidates are looking:
Manchester City
Last season’s champions have strengthened wisely over the summer, bringing in quality in depth to positions that looked a touch weak. In the form of Willy Caballero, Joe Hart now has a genuine contender for his jersey and should he repeat the mistake that cost his side defeat in the fixture with Stoke, he may find himself on the substitutes bench. In defence, Bacary Sagna has arrived from Arsenal, while Eliaquim Mangala will compete with Martin Demichelis for a place alongside Vincent Kompany.
City have bundles of talent in attacks and midfield, too, and will feel confident about their chances of retaining the title. They allowed Alvaro Negredo to leave the club on deadline day, but with Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic still in the squad, they have the firepower. They have started the season with two victories and one loss, but will improve as players regain full match sharpness.
Chelsea
Many pundits and commenters believe Chelsea’s dealings in the transfer market over the summer have given them the edge in the race for the title. Diego Costa is the physical, goal-grabbing striker they have been searching for, while Cesc Fabregas will provide creativity and intelligence in midfield. They have dovetailed superbly so far, and with the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian all offering support in forward areas, they are a real force to be reckoned with. Jose Mourinho obviously has plenty of experience and he’ll be looking to improve upon their relatively disappointing third-placed finish last season.
Arsenal
Can the signing of Danny Welbeck really catapult the Gunners to genuine title competitors? Those who have their doubts are plentiful. Alexis Sanchez has joined from Barcelona and will he bring pace, trickery and a clinical touch to their attacks, but questions have been raised about the strength of their defence, with many debating whether it can sustain a title challenge. They have ability, of course, but this may be a season too soon for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Liverpool
Having run City so close last season, they would have felt confident about the chances of going one better this time around, but having sold Luis Suarez, it may just be a step too far for Liverpool. In place of the Uruguayan, Mario Balotelli has arrived, complete with all the headlines and controversy he creates. He has the match-winning ability of Suarez, yet needs to improve his team ethic and workrate if he is to make a meaningful impression.
Those are the four side expected to compete for the Premier League title, with City and Chelsea the favourites for several people. Who do you think will come out on top? They are the people’s favourites to lift silverware at the end of the campaign and if you fancy a flutter on Premier League betting – William Hill are the ones to look to.
