John Stones’ First Few Months in Manchester
9 Oct
Following the excellent start to the season that Manchester City have shown under Pep Guardiola, much of the praise from fans and media alike has centred on the attacking stars that combine to make this City side thrilling to watch.
The likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling have all rightly been on the receiving end of plaudits for the way in which they have adapted to the new manager’s style, enabling them to showcase their undoubted ability. Aguero has been firing in the goals, Sterling has been reborn after a slow start to his City career, and the midfield maestros of De Bruyne and Silva have allowed the Blues to dictate matches with their control in attacking areas.
Yet there is one star who operates further back who has been a revelation since moving to the club in summer. John Stones was signed from Everton after a protracted transfer saga and while many questioned the sense in pursuing the Englishman, bearing in mind his challenging final year in Merseyside, few are now doubting the club’s purchase.
What a superb beginning to the campaign it has been from Stones. For all the noises at Everton that he was flash and prone to mistakes, it is clear that playing alongside better players and in a system where his assured nature on the ball and refusal to panic under pressure, has been the making of him. Sure, there will be errors along the way and he will be castigated at times for what he does, but he is carrying out Guardiola’s orders efficiently and elegantly.
It would not be a surprise to see him rewarded with City’s player of the year trophy and if you wanted to put your money where your mouth is, have you been wondering where to place sports bets? Pick one of the best betting sites in the UK – William Hill.
With the ongoing injuries to Vincent Kompany and the lack of replacement for both Martin Demichelis and Eliaquim Mangala, Stones has quickly become an integral part of the City backline, regularly playing alongside Nicolas Otamendi, attracting widespread acclaim from those who understand what a fine prospect he looks. He is starring in the present and City will hope he is a fixture in their defence for years to come.
