City Players Start Well In The Euros

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for City’s players in the European Championships, with little time to rest after the end of a hectic domestic season as they’ve been thrown into action quickly for their national teams.
It was a four pronged City thread in England’s first group match, with Kyle Walker, John Stones, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling all getting the nod from Gareth Southgate to line up against Croatie, with Sterling grabbing the only goal of the game to lift his spirits following a tricky final few weeks of the campaign at club level. Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias both starred for Portugal in their 3-0 victory over Hungary – but it wasn’t such a happy tale for Joao Cancelo as he tested positive for Covid-19 in the days leading up the tournament and was replaced in the squad.
After his switch of nationality enabled him to represent Spain, Aymeric Laporte played his first competitive match for his adopted country in their goalless draw with Sweden. Ferran Torres was also named in the line up as he looks to build on a decent first campaign in Manchester, whilst Rodri missed out in central midfield. Elsewhere, Ilkay Gundogan is a key figure in Germany’s side with his control in midfield offering them a threat in addition to their much vaunted attacking options. Oleks Zinchenko adopts a much more advanced midfield position than he typically occupies for City, with fans enjoying him show his quality in attacking areas – whilst Nathan Ake was introduced off the bench for the Netherlands in their opening fixture.
With fixtures coming thick and fast over the next few days and weeks, it promises to be an action-packed period for City’s international stars.
