AGUERO: A Few Thoughts From The Experts
29 Jul
Sergio Leonel Agüero del Castillo. The complete name for what many say is the complete player. He is Man City’s most recent signing and arguably the most exciting, a player sure to enhance the Premier League and add an extra dose of quality to an already powerful City squad.
His arrival has seen Blues’ supporters whipped up into a frenzy, enthused as they are at the sight of the Argentine wearing a City shirt. Aguero, also known as ‘Kun’ – pronounced like ‘Koon’ as in moon, as opposed to ‘Kun’ as in sun – has shown his prodigious talent over the past few seasons for Atlético Madrid and his game, according to those who know him best, is perfectly suited to the English game.
An international teammate of both Carlos Tévez and Pablo Zabaleta, the latter of whom is a good friend of Aguero and helped to convince him to join, ‘El Kun’ has impressed not just in La Liga, but also in the Champions League, where he scored a pair of superb goals against Chelsea. He has a better scoring record than Tévez, whose own future is still less than certain, and came across as a humble and gentle person in his interview with the official club website.
Apart from the odd Champions League match here and there, or the occasional viewing of La Liga, I can’t confess to having seen a great deal of Aguero so I don’t feel in a position to talk about his strengths, weaknesses and career to date. Instead, I’ve picked out three fantastic pieces written by far more knowledgeable people, all of whom have seen a great deal more of ‘El Kun’ than me, so feel free to enjoy their praise of our new signing.
This superb article by the Guardian’s Spanish football expert Sid Lowe details Aguero’s career, analysing what makes him such a threat and is a sign of just how highly he is rated by those who know his game the best.
In the Telegraph, Rory Smith has contacted three of the people who know Aguero best; two former managers and a journalist who also happens to be a close friend and produced this insightful piece which suggests City fans are right to get excited!
The final piece that highlights just what a star we’ve bought is from today’s MEN, in which Ossie Ardiles waxes lyrical about his fellow Argentinean, describing his best attributes and the possibility of a strike partnership with Carlos Tévez.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy reading those articles and hopefully we’ll be able to watch Aguero in action soon enough, either in the Dublin Super Cup or possibly the Community Shield against Manchester United. Whenever we see him, he’s sure not to disappoint.
Never posted a reply but have always viewed your thoughts with a great deal of interest.
With all of our signings this one feels me with the most excitement!! I know that Kun and his family need to feel settled in Manchester, but his whole demeanour, what he says, and what the experts think of him (plus the whinings of other managers) makes me think that this guy could really make a difference. The title this season is a big ask, but maybe with an extra couple of quality signings who knows?
Still wondering about the Adam Johnson situation though.
I do hope his contribution to City would be same as his father-in-law to Napoli
City have touched down in Dublin. Thank you for coming to Ireland, but I am most displeased with the hastily organised gatherings of the squad in places which fans know nothing about. I don’t care about Aguero signing, just get it right for the fans who have been with you long before the new era. PLEASE!!! I am so disappointed.
An Irish Man city fan.
Not the best signing.. What does this do to the careers of Milner, SWP, Johnson, Weiss? I guess its better than keeping the selfish, disoriented, out-of-position, lack of tatical awareness Tevez.
I think it’s a great signing! He’s, like, a really really good player, and I think he would be great at replacing Tev… I think SWP proved that he’s still got that incredible talent in the friendlies, and I really hope that Mancini would actually consider him.. As for Johnson, well, he’s a good player, but I think SWP is better.
