MAN CITY 4 – 0 Swansea – MY THOUGHTS

16 Aug

A wonderful start to the season. Four goals, a clean sheet and one of the most exciting debuts in a long time. Manchester City are off and running in the Premier League this season after a convincing display against Swansea, save for a twenty minute spell from the visitors, in which the Blues dominated the second half and were fully deserving of the three points. The result is all well and good, and it’s fantastic to kick off the campaign with a win, but the performance was what pleased me most, and in particular, the individual displays of messers Dzeko, Clichy, Silva and Aguero.

Truth be told, Roberto Mancini could not have asked for a better fixture to start off the season. A home match against one of the promoted sides and crucially, one who try to play good football, thus resulting in an open affair, leaving plenty of space for our quality players. And one of those made a stronger impression than most. Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero.

It wasn’t just the goals that caught the eye, but the movement, the vision and the excitement he brought. With his first touch, he almost scored, his second likewise. It was a vibrant display, one that made you think we have a real star on our hands. His first goal was a typical poacher’s goal, very much a Shaun Goater ‘right place right time’ moment, whilst the second hinted at his ability. He comes across as a genuine and humble person and the quicker he can build up his match fitness, the better.

His arrival onto the pitch noticeably helped Edin Dzeko, too. The Bosnian was already having an impressive game, his dribbling and hold up play markedly improved from last year, but the presence of another body alongside him visibly boosted his confidence. Dzeko took a huge amount of unfair criticism last year but he’s now scored two in two and looks a completely different player.

Another player who made his competitive debut last night was Gael Clichy, and though he won’t get many plaudits, his was a performance which suggested our longstanding problem with the leftback position could be over. His defensive play was solid, but it was his attacking side which caught the eye. Whereas Aleks Kolarov possesses all the subtlety of a raging bull, Clichy actually had an end product and linked very well with Gareth Barry. His energy and workrate will only improve and he should go from strength to strength.

Roberto Mancini, in my opinion, did well in bringing on Stefan Savic from the bench towards the end, just to give the defender his first experience in the Premier League. He’ll face many tougher tasks than coming on when we are 3-0 up against Swansea, but it was good to see him on the pitch.

View on the Visitors: I thought Swansea played some decent, pretty football but it didn’t harm us. Most of their possession was in their defensive area and they failed to really exploit the pace of Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer. They might please the neutrals this year but I feel they will struggle for goals. Their fans, however, were fantastic throughout. Loud, noisy and encouraging, they were everything a set of away supporters should be.

So overall it’s a great start for City, an even better one for Aguero and we can now look forward to the trip to Bolton.

  1. DAVID SILVA IS MY GOD. THEN AGAIN, I QUITE LIKE THAT AGUERO FELLOW 16/08/2011 at 8:26 pm #

That picture of Aguero and Silva…. Is that a railway station?

As I have pointed out on the other post, I may disagree with you in part. However, a good review for a cracking game.

Aguero seems to be something else. If the Tévez saga is solved (and if he were to stay) I would LOVE to see him, Aguero and Silva on the pitch at the same time.

    Take a Bow Kun

It is Stockport station. Any option from Dzeko, Tévez, Aguero, Balotelli, Silva, Johnson plus possibly Nasri will be exciting to watch!

You add Nasri to Silva, Augero and Dzeko and you get a mix as innovative as Albert Einstein. Can not stop the following rhythm in my mind:

Oh Tevez off you go, we have got Aguero

Aguero being compared to Romario, whilst Kun’s a great player (gets involved in play more) Romario was the ultimate striker! Your view? fb

I can not agree with your comments more esp on Clichy!

Enjoy it while it lasts. We ain’t gonna get that much space in a game again all season. Can Aguero (or anybody) actually play better than that? Every touch looked like there may be a goal in it.

  6. GAEL CLICHY YOU ARE MY HERO!!! 17/08/2011 at 5:53 pm #

” With his first touch, he almost scored”
    >>> SECOND TOUCH! He controlled it first of all, and that was no-way near going in ;)

“very much a Shaun Goater ‘right place right time’ moment, whilst the second hinted at his ability”
    >>> Exactly what my Dad’s friend said, and that makes a good striker!
